Hang PanArt, Halo, Hank Propane Tank Knock Off Drum. How to Make Drawing-Diagram, Drums For Sale, Where to Buy Used

So I was browsing thru Youtube just a bit ago looking at unique instruments and came across something I had never heard of. And holy shit the sound is amazing!

What did I hear? A Hang (also known as a Hang drum)

I was at a Renaissance festival earlier this year and a buddy of mine was showing me a Tibetan Bowl (Singing bowl) he wanted to buy. The sounds they produced was so damn calming and soothing it was unreal. And this is the same way I feel after hearing the hang drum.

I’ve been digging up stuff all day about these and from what I can see the original hang drum produced by PANArt in Switzerland is damn rare to get a hold of. And very pricey to boot. If I could find one would I buy it? Hell yes. But the other part would be the $ I’d have to pay for it. Not saying it is not worth it but damn.

Here is a really interesting write-up on the Hang (in PDF format) http://intellagence.eu.com/acoustics2008/acoustics2008/cd1/data/articles/002762.pdf

I did see there are some other similar “drums” like the Halo “drum”/Halo handpan from Kyle Cox and Jim Dusin of Pantheon Steel. (which also looks very damn hard to get a hold of too nowadays without spending a pretty penny. These do sounds very nice too.

And then there are even people making “Hank” drums. Which looks like a creation from a man named Dennis Havlena. The Hank drum is basically a tuned propane tank. And to be honest there are actually a couple being played in some videos on Youtube that don’t sound that bad. Dennis has a diagram and drawing on his site on how to create one. (and you bet your ass I will be making one. Gotta start somewhere right?) Here is the drawings/diagram on how to make the Hank propane drum http://dennishavlena.com/for-webpage-lp-hang.htm

Please if you find this page please leave any relevant comments to the topic. Maybe you know another place that sells knock offs? Maybe you found a used hang drum for sale? Or you know where to buy a similar sounding instrument or even how to make one. Heck maybe you even have a cd of you playing you wanna pitch. GO FOR IT!

I now have a mini-obsession with these things and wanna know more, hear more, see more, and even try to make one (attempt to first at least try a hack job at making a Hank Drum, haha).

Here are some videos to enjoy too of these beautiful instruments in action.

This is a short video of the talented Davide Swarup, an Italian hang drummer living in Amsterdam. His live performance is very impressive and I had the privilege to listen to him play for a good amount of time. If you liked this video, you can download a FREE mp3 song of this video (thanks EJWNL for creating this mp3) and listen to it offline. Cheers! MP3 Download link: sites.google.com

This particular instrument is the world’s first hank-drum. NEWS: THE 1ST PANTHEON STEEL “HALO” HAS BEEN RELEASED & A VIDEO OF IT CAN BE SEEN AT: www.youtube.com ……………………………………………………….. Just noodling around on an invention of mine, the propane-tank hank drum, which is in the scale of D minor pentatonic (D/ACDFGac). This is not a hang drum, but is in the tongue-drum family. It’s notes are arranged very much like a real hang drum & it’s a terribly fun instrument to play. I have another short video clip of this instrument on YouTube as well at: youtube.com Full information on building one of these is on my webpage at: DennisHavlena.com Dennis Havlena – northern Michigan GREAT NEWS: although a real, Swiss-made hang drum is extremely difficult to obtain these days, Pantheon Steel, a maker of beautiful steel drums (“steel pans”) is just starting to sell their version of the Hang drum called the HALO hand-pan. See halo.pantheonsteel.com for details. They have a demo video & the Halo sounds beautiful! Later note: also see this youtube video: www.youtube.com

Sedona-based drummer, musician, teacher, and all-around amazing dude Three Trees demonstrates how to rock the Halo Drum, a relatively new, rare instrument. The Halo is sort of like a modally tuned steel drum set you can play in your lap. I totally want one even though there’s a 2+ year waiting list.
